Hydropower,from penstock to switchyard.

Hydroelectric plants are built in the hardest terrain, over the longest schedules, across the most interfaces. Belgineer has taken fourteen of them to Final Acceptance.

01The interface business

A hydro plant is a civil project, a mechanical project and an electrical project that must finish on the same day. Turbine and generator suppliers, dam and tunnel contractors, switchyard builders and the grid operator all depend on each other — and on access roads that may close for winter.

As a Siemens Power Generation project manager, Levent Belgin delivered the electrical balance of plant, instrumentation & control and 154 kV switchyards for plants including Akköy II (2 × 135 MWe), Kargı, Akköprü and Uluabat (2 × 50 MWe each), Uzunçayır, Akocak, Burçak, Uzundere, Balkusan, Koçlu, Ören, Egemen and Kayabükü — from the Black Sea mountains to the Mediterranean coast.

02What we deliver
  1. 01

    Electrical balance of plant

Generator step-up transformers, MV switchgear, auxiliary power, cabling, earthing and lighting for powerhouse and dam.

  2. 02

    Instrumentation & control

Unit control, governor and excitation interfaces, protection systems and SCADA.

  3. 03

    154 kV switchyards & OHL

Switchyard design review, equipment supply, erection and the overhead line to the grid.

  4. 04

    Civil–electrical interfaces

Embedded items, cable routes, penstock and powerhouse coordination so electrical work is never waiting on concrete.

  5. 05

    Unit commissioning

Dry and wet commissioning, synchronisation and reliability runs, unit by unit.

  6. 06

    Integration of cascades

Connecting new plants to existing ones — as at Akköy II with Akköy I (3 × 35 MWe).

03How we de-risk it
  1. 01

    Plan around the terrain

Logistics, access and seasonal windows shape the programme from day one.

  2. 02

    Freeze embedded items early

Anything cast into concrete is designed and delivered ahead of the civil works.

  3. 03

    Commission unit by unit

Each unit is energised and proven before the next, protecting revenue from day one.

  4. 04

    Hand over a system

Operators receive protection settings, drawings and training — not just equipment.

05Questions, answered

What does EBoP cover on a hydroelectric plant?

Everything electrical outside the turbine-generator itself: step-up transformers, MV switchgear, station auxiliaries, DC systems, cabling, earthing and lighting, and usually the connection to the switchyard.

How many hydroelectric projects has Belgineer’s principal delivered?

Fourteen hydroelectric plants in Türkiye were taken to Final Acceptance under Levent Belgin’s project management at Siemens Power Generation, ranging from 15 MWe run-of-river schemes to the 2 × 135 MWe Akköy II HEPP.

Can you help with modernisation of existing hydro plants?

Yes. Replacing control, protection and electrical systems in operating plants requires careful outage planning and interface management — the same discipline as a new build, under tighter constraints.

Do you manage the switchyard and transmission line too?

Yes. Most of the hydro plants on the record included the 154 kV switchyard, and several included the overhead line to the national grid.

Have a project inthis discipline?

Tell us where it stands. You will hear back from Levent directly.
